It is rumoured that the tradition of Afternoon Tea originated in the mid-19th century from Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. Complaining of “having that sinking feeling” as the afternoon wore on, she initiated the habit of enjoying a pot of tea in the afternoon accompanied by a light snack. She began to invite her friends to join her in this ritual and the idea caught on with other society hostesses.
